Elements of a Pokémon Battle
-
The Goal: Collect all 6 Prize Cards by knocking out the opponent's Pokémon. You can also win if your opponent has no Pokémon left on their bench or no cards to draw.
-
The Deck (60 Cards): A mix of Pokémon, Energy (powers attacks), and Trainer cards (special actions). Players can have a maximum of four cards with the same name, excluding Basic Energy.
-
Setup: Players flip a coin, draw 7 cards, and place 6 cards face-down as "prize cards." They set one Active Pokémon and up to 5 on the "bench".
-
The Turn Structure:
-
Draw: Draw one card from the deck.
-
Actions: Players can attach one energy, play Item cards, use Supporter cards (one per turn), evolve Pokémon (if not their first turn/played turn), and retreat.
-
Attack & End: Choose an attack, check energy costs, apply damage, and check for weaknesses or resistances. Attacking ends the turn.
-

Important Tips for New Players
-
Weakness & Resistance: Pokémon take double damage from types they are weak to and less from types they resist, making strategy crucial.
-
Evolution: Evolving a Basic Pokémon to Stage 1 or 2 increases HP and attack power, though you cannot evolve on the same turn a card is played.
-
Retreating: To move a damaged Active Pokémon to the bench, players must pay the cost shown at the bottom of the card, usually in Energy.
-
Keep it Simple: Start with the Battle Academy guide and focus on the basics before exploring complex deck building.
