-Portability: Its small, lightweight design makes it perfect for small spaces, crafting on the go, or storage.
4.Chess Club Library Meet-ups
Recently we upgraded our number of chess boards. In addition to our 7 chess sets, we now also have a double sided 3-player and 4-player chess set. Three-player and four-player chess are popular variants designed to expand the traditional two-player game into a more complex, chaotic, and social experience. These variants introduce shifting alliances, increased tactical, and different board layouts to accommodate extra players.

Parent/Teacher and Student Discounts!
February 18th, 2026
We have a list of locations in Ontario that offer discounts to homeschool parents/teachers and students.
Homeschool parents/teachers and students in Ontario can access discounts at various retail, educational, and cultural locations by showing a homeschool ID card, letter of intent, or Staples teacher membership. Key spots include Staples for supplies, Michaels for crafts, Apple for tech, and local educational stores like The Learning House, The Learning Tree, and Scholar's Choice.
*These locations require you to purchase in-store, and ask about homeschool parent/teacher and student discounts at the service counter/checkout in order to receive a discount. A copy of your notification of homeschooling sent to the school board is often accepted as proof.*
Locations and Retailers
Staples Canada: Offers a free teacher membership program with exclusive savings on print solutions and supplies.
Michaels: Provides a 15% teacher discount on arts and crafts supplies.
Educational Book Stores/Suppliers: The Learning House (Bradford), The Learning Tree (Burlington), Louise Kool & Galt (Scarborough), Spectrum Educational Supplies (Newmarket), and Scholar's Choice (London) offer specialized resources.
Technology: Apple Education Store and Dell offer special educational pricing for educators.
Bookstores & Other: Indigo/Chapters (often requires Educator Program membership), Michaels, and Staples are common spots.
Educational & Cultural Venues
Museums and Science Centres: Many, such as the Royal Botanical Gardens, offer free or reduced admission to educators, though some may require proof of a local address or a valid teacher ID.
Attractions: Zoos, aquariums, art galleries, and cinemas often have programs for educators
How to Access Discounts
Create a Teacher ID: Use tools like Canva to make an ID or purchase one from organisations like the Canadian Centre for Home Education.
https://cche.ca/homeschool-photo-id-cards/
Letter of Intent: A copy of your notification of homeschooling sent to the school board is often accepted as proof.
Ask Directly: Always ask if a "teacher discount" is available, as many local businesses offer them without advertising, as suggested in this Reddit thread.

Open Gym Time for Homeschoolers – Every Tuesday!
Every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m, we have access to the gym at Birchmount Community Centre for 2 hours of free, open play for homeschoolers!
Location: Birchmount Community Centre, 93 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, ON M1N 3J7
This is a fantastic opportunity for kids to be active indoors—rain or shine! The gym is divided into two sections: One side for younger kids & One side for older kids
So whether your child is into basketball, soccer, floor hockey, or just running around and having fun, they’ll have plenty of space to move and play. The program is open to kids ages 0 to 12, but if your child is a bit older, that’s totally okay too!
The best part? It’s completely FREE and already underway—just show up on a Tuesday when you can. We'd love to see more families take part. If we get a strong turnout, there’s a chance to extend the time or even add another day, which would be amazing for our community.
Let’s build something fun and active for our kids together. See you at the gym!
*Please note that the open gym time for homeschoolers is NOT hosted by the Scarberian Homeschool Club. Originally posted in the G.T.A Homeschool Field Trips Group on Facebook*
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know.
Kind Regards,

The West Highland Creek is a key tributary of the Highland Creek watershed, originating in L'Amoreaux Park in northwest Scarborough and flowing southward through highly urbanised areas to join the main branch. It flows through a naturalised ravine system but faces significant urbanisation, high pollution, and flash flooding risks due to high impervious surfaces.
Key Details of West Highland Creek
Location: Begins near Steeles Avenue/Kennedy Road, travelling through L'Amoreaux, Tam O'Shanter-Sullivan, and Bendale neighbourhoods before connecting with other branches.
Watershed Characteristics: It is part of one of Toronto's most developed watersheds, frequently featuring concretized sections, particularly in upper areas.
Environment & Ecology: Despite urbanisation, the creek features ravine areas with naturalised sections. It supports local wildlife, with fish species like trout, carp, and salmon present in the broader Highland Creek system.
Environmental Impact: Due to its urban nature, the creek is susceptible to rapid flooding during heavy rainfall and carries significant pollution runoff.
Recreation: The creek is surrounded by parks like L'Amoreaux Park and Birkdale Ravine Park, which offer trail systems for hiking and walking.
West Highland Creek plays a crucial role in draining the northwest portion of Scarborough.
